Do you have an idea that just might work? The Launch Lab programme is your opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the greats and get your venture off the ground.

The six-month Launch Lab programme combines Outset’s investment expertise, unique laboratory and workshop spaces, and active on-site community to help you get started.

You will receive as part of the programme:

  • Residency within the Outset space with access to suitable laboratory or workshop space with operational support.
  • All the additional perks of being located within the space — Founders Breakfasts, educational workshop sessions, access to equipment, and being part of our 180+ person community of fellow venture builders.
  • The opportunity to meet with our investment committee for additional investment and advice, and access to our wider investor network.
  • Fortnightly meetings with the Outset Ventures team to provide support and accountability.
  • Introductions to the right commercial and technical expertise and mentorship.

You’re the right fit for the programme if:

  • Your idea is in the “deep tech” space — this means that you’re working on a science- or engineering-based project. That said, formal technical training is certainly not a requirement!
  • You’re able to work within the Outset space in Auckland for the duration of the programme.
  • You’re a solo founder or a founding team — either way, you’ll be immersed in a community of peers building their ventures alongside you.
  • You haven’t taken institutional investment yet — this is what we help you get ready for.

We like to keep things simple. There’s no due date, our intake is rolling, and the start date is whenever you’re ready.

What we would like to understand in your expression of interest is;

  • What your project is.
  • Who you are.
  • What the future looks like if your project is successful.

That’s it. No pitch decks, no financial forecasts. We’re just looking to understand the change that you’re trying to make in the world.

FAQs

How much is the investment?

An investment of NZ$100,000, split between in-kind and cash, is our minimum. We can combine this with further cash investment from the Outset Ventures fund, depending on how much you need to get your venture to lift-off. This can be an additional investment of anywhere between NZ$50,000 and NZ$200,000.

How much equity will you take?

Investments as part of the Launch Lab programme will be made on friendly SAFE terms. This means that our investment won’t convert into equity until you raise money at the end of the programme. It will depend on how much the Launch Lab investment amount is, and the valuation of your company at the time you raise your next round.

What will I be doing for the six months?

Your job will be to build your venture. The Launch Lab is the opportunity for you to access whatever you need to start your company, whether that’s specialised facilities and equipment, commercial guidance, or cash. You can choose your level of immersion and engagement with the Outset suite of support, as long as you prioritise what will move your project forward.

What happens at the end of the programme?

You will pitch to our Investment Committee for further investment, this time on priced round, to take your venture to the next level. If you need more money than what Outset’s fund can commit to, we will help you get additional investment from other investors in our broad network. You can still work from the Outset site if that works best for you.

What control am I giving up by granting equity to Outset?

We’re supporters, not controllers. We don’t want any special or controlling interests in your company. We won’t ask for a board seat on a Launch Lab company board or for any unusual investor rights. You will still run the show.

What is the application process?

The first step is to submit an expression of interest here.
We’ll then reach out to you to set up a chat with one of the Outset Ventures team (Angus BlairMat Rowe or Imche Fourie) to learn more.
The final step is meeting with the decision makers – our investment committee.
Our committee is composed of Peter Beck (Rocket Lab), Dr Sean Simpson (LanzaTech), Dr Will Barker (Mint Innovation), Robbie Paul (Icehouse Ventures), Imche Fourie (Outset Ventures).
