We primarily invest at the Series A and Series B stage, once technical risk has been significantly reduced and companies are preparing for global scale.

How is Momentum different from Outset Fund I & II?

Momentum is a high-conviction opportunity fund that strategically invests into the strongest performers and top follow-ons from Outset’s broader portfolio, concentrating capital at the point of maximum value acceleration.

What kind of companies does Momentum back?

Momentum invests in deep-technology companies solving global-scale problems in areas such as advanced materials, fusion energy, hard-tech infrastructure, and next-generation mobility.

What is the target fund size?

Momentum is targeting a fund size of US$30–50 million, allowing us to concentrate into a select number of high-potential companies.

How many investments will the fund make?

The fund is designed to hold 6 to 10 core portfolio companies, allowing for meaningful ownership positions and active support.

What kind of returns are you targeting?

Our objective is to generate top-quartile venture returns, targeting a 20%+ net IRR over the fund lifetime. Actual outcomes will depend on timing, exits, and market conditions.

How can I access the DD materials?

You can request access via the form on this page. We review all submissions and grant access to qualified investors on a rolling basis.

Minimum allocations will be communicated during the DD process. As a guide, Momentum is structured for institutional, family office, and large professional investors.

Is Momentum eligible under the NZ Active Investor Plus Visa?

Yes. Investments are intended to qualify under the NZ Active Investor Plus Visa framework, subject to final regulatory treatment and personal circumstances.

How is deal flow generated?

Deal flow is primarily sourced from Outset Ventures’ ecosystem, including its incubated companies, university spinouts, and deep relationships with New Zealand’s top technical founders.

Does Momentum lead rounds or follow?

Momentum typically invests as a strategic participant alongside top global investors, taking meaningful positions without always leading rounds.

What geographies do portfolio companies operate in?

While founded in New Zealand, portfolio companies are global-first businesses, often expanding early into the US, Europe, and Asia.

Who makes the investment decisions?

All investment decisions are made by the Momentum Investment Committee, which brings together Outset’s partners and senior advisers with deep global venture experience.

What is the expected deployment timeline?

Capital is expected to be deployed over a 3–5 year investment period, with follow-on reserves held for high-performing portfolio companies.

Can I speak to the team before committing?

Absolutely. Once your DD request is approved, you’ll have the opportunity to schedule a direct conversation with the Momentum team.

What are the primary risks?

Deep-tech investing involves risks including technical execution, capital intensity, regulatory uncertainty, and long time-to-liquidity. These risks are detailed fully in the DD materials.
